Berne

Berne, since 1848 the federal capital of Switzerland, is an enticing city with a unique heritage. Located in a loop of the River Aare, the centre of the city contains hidden antique shops and little squares, where you can get a taste of the air of ancient times. Traditional celebrations contribute to the magic that envelopes the city. The Zibelemärit (onion market), its origins lost in the mists of time, is held on the fourth Monday of November. Another tradition is the Christmas market, where you can taste Nidletäfeli (candy made with butter and caramelized sugar) or Glühwein (hot, spiced wine). The Swiss capital, whilst a modern and lively city, has thus managed to retain its medieval charm.
Whether in summer or in winter, Berne is also an ideal starting point to discover central Switzerland. You can soon reach the Bernese Oberland, where enchanting Alpine scenery contains numerous interesting towns such as Interlaken, Gstaad and Grindelwald, whilst there is also the famous, unforgettable, Jungfrau mountain to marvel at.
