Palma de Mallorca is Mallorca's principle city and the capital of the Balearic islands. This municipality of 325,000 people has for some time been one of the main tourist centres of the archipelago, well known for its beaches (El Arenal, for example, is a good 4,600 metres long and 50 metres wide), and its nightlife.
Even though the area is famous for endless opportunities for fun and entertainment, Palma de Mallorca is also extremely interesting historically and architecturally. The architecture of its buildings gives you a sense of an intense past. The different periods and architectural styles are easily picked out: from the ancient Arab city to the old city known as Portella, from the Villa de Baix (the lower city) to the Villa de Dalt (the highest part of the city).
